Journal for 30-July-2004 : Mount Laurier

Lots of wide (often bumpy) shoulder all the way out of the beautiful La Verenderye Wildlife Reserve today, and a moderate headwind to keep us honest. Quite a few hills too, and lots and lots of traffic. When I saw this route on the map I pictured 300km through beautiful uninhabited wilderness on a quiet road that lead to a few backwater towns of the backwater province of the backwater country of North America. Beautiful yes. Uninhabited no. Even allowing for the fact this is the start of a long weekend in the middle of a very short summer, school holidays, and this is the only substantial recreational area in all of Quebec, this highway still seemed inordinately busy.
