Journal for 15-Jul-2001 : Barcaldine |
---|
Date: 15/07/2001 (Location=Barcaldine, Dist=186km, Total=1860km) Early start and beautiful dawn.
We rode 23km inthe first hour, then the tailwind came up. !!! MORLE RESTORED !!!
Great fund fast riding to Blackall, at times cruising above the maximum speed of the previous days. We reached Blackall by 10:15 (80km).
Blackall is a very nice looking town, clean, tiday with lots of well kept lawn and parks. However the water *really* stinks. We purchased 10L of distilled H2O from the supermarket.
The remaining 105k to Barcaldine becoming a bit too far, especially as the tailwind petered out to nothing after lunch.
Collapse in motel room at Barcaldine.
Moral at rock bottom again as news of a lone gunman abducted and probably killed English missing tourists around Barrow Creek on the Stuart Highway in NT. At the time of writing the road from Alice to Tenant Creek is closed, and Police are advising people to stay away from the roads between Alice and Katherine. There is now a real possibility we may have to abandon the trip at Mt Isa. I'm prepared to accept some level of risk riding bikes on public roads. But I draw the line at being shot at !!!
