Journal for 11-Jul-2003 : Mackay |
---|
Lots of sugar cane and a very tropical atmosphere (ie humid) dominated as we rode out of Carmila. More good tailwinds, (down to good planning on my part :-)) and rolling hills through cane fields. Great fun riding, but the traffic is starting to pick up.
The traffic really picked up after Sarina, and spent 30 days dodging trucks. Lots more sugar cane and cane trams.
Mackay is on a huge flood plane. The old part of town is full of Queenslander style houses (I've said this before, but these are deliberately draughty wooden things with big verandahs that sit on head high stilts). The newer parts on the other side of the river looks like any other mega housing development.
Lunch at the Mackay visitor's centre, then off to Linda's Aunt and Uncle's place.
This is the last day of the Queensland school holidays. We can tell it's school holidays because every second car that drives past filled to the brim with holiday baggage inevitably a tiny face with a dropped jaw presses it's nose against the rear windscreen to look at us.
