Journal for 12-Feb-2004 : Te Anau |
---|
Awoke to the sound of a tropical downpour outside. I did this at 1am, 2:30am, 4am, 5am, 6am, 7am and 7:30am.
We took a while to get going. By 10am the rain was threatening to clear so we headed off, having learned the hard way the value of booking well ahead at a tourist town.
Short stop of the Clifton suspension bridge.
Actually quite enjoyable riding, with the sun in then sky and wind at our backs. Just one serious hill (left Linda with sore knees) and apart from the 1.5hrs it took us to ride the 15km into the wind, into Manapouri (wind alternated between blowing up and down the valley) we made good time.
At the weir that stops Lake's Te Anau and Manapouri draining down their natural course to the ocean and through the hydro electric generators in Doubtful Sound instead, we met a couple car tourists.
"Where are you from?" I was asked in a strong cockney accent.
"Australia"
"So am I". (for last 27 years at any rate).
Inquired about the Milford track. Booked out till May.
