Journal for 24-Jul-2003 : Cairns (Still) |
---|
This was our third day off the bikes in a row in Cairns, and the first day we did anything other than run around washing, eating, cleaning, eating. fixing or organising to have things fixed - or just lazing by the pool. We took the gondola up to Kurranda and came back by train. The cable car really gives and excellent close-up view of the rainforest canopy, and the train is still the best way to see the sensational Barron Gorge. However impressive the natural wonders of this trip are, this is certainly not off the beaten track. This is the ultimate made-for-tourists extravaganza, as evidenced by the price and the endless array of gift shops lining the route.
Unfortunately our new spare tyres arrived today. Had they arrived a day later we would have been forced to go and see Australia take on the might of Bangladesh in Test cricket. Instead we need to summon the motivation to ride away from the tropical coast, over the mountains and into the deserts. I can tell you, it's not as easy as leaving the wintery southern states.
