Journal for 17-Mar-2004 : Wairoa |
---|
Very tough day today with lots of distance, hills and trucks.
Left at 8:30 with clouds coming over. Easy riding on the rough shoulder to the SH5 turnoff. From there, the hills started. Lots of climbing, and lots of getting off the road for trucks.
Spectacular climbs and descents through devil's elbow, and eventually to Lake Tutira where we stopped at the DOC camp site for our first break. Leaving delayed by a passing shower that didn't pass, so we stayed for lunch as well. Harrased by a hungry goose.
More really hilly riding through Putorino (as town almost as small as the sub-atomic partical it's named after), Kotemaori (a set of disused tennis courts) Raupunga and eventually Wairoa just before half past six.
Enjoyed a spectacularly average Chinese takeaway meal for Linda's birthday. Tonight, I give Linda the best birthday present ever: seperate single beds.
