Journal for 13-Aug : Anchorage

Cycled into Campbelltown for some munchies and bubble wrap.

Just missed train, but had to wait 1hr at airport for the checkins to open. Once open, I got my bike box and repacked it and my luggage, a bit too hastily. Found myself left with just one riding glove!

Very long flight. Did not sleep a wink.

Took bus to Santa Monica. Chatted to Chinese New Zealander. Memorial Day holiday today, so the beach & pier were packed.

Nearly fell asleep on the bus back to LAX. Erratic driving enough to stop me dropping off.

Checked into Swiss with the 3am groggies. Couldn't find my luggage tags at checkin (didn't know I needed them).

"Washed" in air side airport toilet.

Slept 30 min on departure lounge floor.

Finally on way to Switzerland. As the flight progressed, the amount of English vs German spoken changed. Most announcements were in English, Deutsch & French, which made them particularly long.

Made it to departures gate 2.5hrs before flight. Long delay when AC PA to
Vancouver via Honolulu all forced to be re-screened due to AC catering
putting on an unsealed meal tray.

Found I'd unintentionally smuggled on my hand cream.

Flight reasonable, lots of leg room, but terrible in-flight movies. All
kids movies.

Made it through SFO immigration & customs no worries. Bike box did not
fit through too many gaps though.

At airport. Grabbed about an hours sleep at the unsecured side café
(Hungry Jacks - yuk)

Got the phone connected to Cingular (no idea how), tried to send sms -
failed. Unable to connect after that. Basically Optus global roaming
doesn't work. The US networks don't recognise my SIM as valid. Called
Cingular tech support, told me to call Optus (very hard without mobile
service).

Got some sleep on airport floor .

Views over San Fran at night.

Could almost see midnight sun on NE horrizon when plane @ altitude.
